Transition Day. Thursday, November 3

Early and delicious breakfast downstairs after a very quiet night in Hunter Square.  Evidently the police action today cleared out all the revellers!

Walked down Cockburn Street to Waverley Station to catch the 9:00 train to Newark Northgate then change train to go to Lincoln.  Extremely nice and helpful person sat across from us.  He was from Dundee and told me when the great views were coming up, checked our train times and platforms, and was just a fascinating person--former fireman with trains as a hobby.  Really enjoyed talking to him.

Once in the Premier Inn, we walked up to Lincoln cathedral, trying to follow another nice gentleman's advice and avoid the steep path, but ended up on the very street called Steep Hill.

Steep Hill is a fascinating street lined with wonderful little shops.  This road has a 1 in 7 gradient and also on it is the 12th c. Jew's House, England's oldest domestic residence.  Lincoln was the 2nd most important Jewish Community in England in the 12th century.  Also here is the Norman House from 1170 that was leased by the Knights Templars at one time.

We climbed Steep Hill and popped in to the cathedral to get our tour tickets sorted out then did a tour of the outside on our own in the rain.  Found the sundial, Judgement Porch, King Edward & Queen Eleanor statues, the tomb on the green, the Archer sculpture "Between Two Worlds," the St. Mary's well and the Tennyson statue, the figure peeking out of the stone wall on Eastgate Road, and the Exchequer Gate and the Castle.

Very impressive.  Can't wait to go back tomorrow and Saturday.  Hopefully the weather will improve.

Dinner at the Thyme restaurant downstairs.
