Wednesday, June 24--Whale-Watching & Harry Potter Trivia

Today we are at sea and are doing absolutely nothing. Went up to Spinnaker Lounge to watch for whales and were rewarded with the sights of 2, arching their backs out of the water.

Other interesting differences I have noted between American TV and British TV:

1) The oddest thing—I saw an interview with the reporter STANDING with his back mostly to the camera and the interviewee STANDING facing him. Just the two of them standing there talking. This would NEVER be done on TV in America as it would just seem too awkward. They would be sitting across from each other.

2) In the British Spelling Bee they showed this morning, the children spelled the words VERY fast. In America, they painstakingly spell the words letter by letter very slowly and fret over each letter.

3) The verb usage over here in Britain is different from ours. We say, The team IS going to London. The Brits say, The team ARE going to London. We say, The public IS overwhelmingly in favor of it. The Brits say, The public ARE overwhelmingly in favour of it. We say, The two weeks have made a huge difference. The Brit on TV today said, The two weeks has made a huge difference—implying that he is speaking of a two week period, but not saying it.

It’s very interesting how the language works out some times. Ray went to a Harry Potter Trivia event and his team came in second. Very obscure questions about the movies.

We ate, we read, we ate again. After 12 days of eating on this ship, we have decided that we are tired of the food. The chefs are not that imaginative and the food is only mediocre at best. Picked up our cruise DVD, highlighting all the best of this cruise.

Lenny Windsor gave a talk about his life with Benny Hill in the Spinnaker. It was very interesting to hear about Benny’s life both funny and sad. Then we went to dinner and came back to the cabin to pack.

Off the ship first thing in the morning and onto the train for Glasgow. Hopefully I will be able to post all the cruise pictures once we get there and get settled in.
