Not So Smooth Sailing May 10, 2011

The past few days have been quite “rolly”. I don’t know if it is because of the storms or because the Captain is trying to make up time lost because of our late departure and the diversion to Bermuda. Either way, we are going full speed ahead and running into some very rolling seas.

On top of that, our cabin—in all other respects in the perfect position on the ship—is directly over the expansion joint which means that every time we hit a wave, the ship torques and the two pieces of metal are hitting against each other underneath us. So all night long, every 30 seconds or so, we hear this LOUD clanging of metal as if someone is slamming a hammer against a metal door 3-4 times. Then quite while the ship rolls crazily then again with the hammering.

Amazingly I’ve only been seasick for about 2 hours, but that was enough to keep be from venturing onto the higher decks of the ship which roll more. So I am stuck on the lower decks and subjected to the “Chinese water torture” of the metal clanging as the ship tries to throw me from one side of the cabin to the other. Thank goodness our dining room is on a deck even lower than our cabin.

Last night we went to the Vista Lounge to hear a funny comedian/magician. I’m catching up on lots of movies I’ve missed at the theatre—Social Network, Karate Kid, Salt, Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Trader, and repeats like Harry Potter and When Harry Met Sally. Found a few good books in the library—a couple of good adventure/mysteries by Steve Berry. All in all, just trying to keep things stable until we reach land. On the up side--the food is delicious and the wait staff really nice. Hope your days are going much smoother.
