Have I told you about the white squirrels we have here in the Asheville area?! They are mostly in Brevard where there is a white Squirrel festival every Memorial Day.
The story goes that a carnival man brought a pair of white squirrels from islands off Hawaii to Florida. When his caravan turned over in a ditch, the squirrels escaped and made their way to a nearby pecan grove. The owner of the grove kept them for a white, but they escaped in 1940. That's when another man found them and sold them to a man who gave them to his niece in Brevard. This family got tired of them and let them go free and they have multiplied many times over since then. We see them quite often in the parks around Etowah. Quite a sight!
